About CyberPatriot
CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition created by the Air Force Association to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other STEM disciplines.
Competition Format
- Teams of 2-6 high school or middle school students
- Multiple rounds of competition (qualification, state, regional, and national)
- Six-hour timed events to secure virtual machines and network devices
- Scores based on security vulnerabilities fixed and critical services maintained
Key Dates (2024-2025 Season)
- Round 1: October 2024
- Round 2: November 2024
- State Round: January 2025
- Semifinals: February 2025
- National Finals: March 2025 in Baltimore, MD
Competition Challenges
Teams compete in three main areas, identifying and fixing security vulnerabilities while maintaining critical services:
Windows
Secure Windows Server and Desktop environments, manage users, disable vulnerable services
Linux
Harden Linux systems, configure firewall rules, secure package managers and services
Cisco Networking
Configure network devices, set up routing, implement ACLs and security policies
